CHRIS CORNELL Talks 'Telephantasm' CD, SOUNDGARDEN's Future

Vocalist Chris Cornell of the reunited rock band SOUNDGARDEN spoke to USA Today about "Telephantasm: A Retrospective", the group's first CD in 13 years, which will be packaged with initial shipments of the new video game "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" game (out Sept. 28 for PS3, Wii and Xbox 360, rated T for ages 13-up, $60-up). This marks the first time a full-length music album will be bundled with a video game. The set will be exclusive to the game for one week, hitting regular retailers on October 5.

"There are a lot of different ways to get your music out (and) ... this clearly to me is one way to do that," Cornell told USA Today. "'Guitar Hero' has actually turned on a lot of young music fans to music that they otherwise might not have ever heard."

"Telephantasm: A Retrospective" will include a mix of hit singles and album cuts, along with the previously announced track "Black Rain", which was recorded during the sessions for the band's 1991 "Badmotorfinger" album but never before released.

According to Cornell, "Black Rain" captures "that super-heavy version (of the band) we were finally realizing to its fullest potential about 1991."

On the same date that the game/CD combo arrives, "Telephantasm" will also be issued in three expanded editions, including a double-disc set containing 12 additional tracks — five of which have never been released — and SOUNDGARDEN's first DVD.

The DVD will contain 20 music videos, 13 of which have never been released.

The other two expanded editions are a deluxe three-LP vinyl edition and a numbered, limited Super Deluxe Collector's Edition. The Super Deluxe Collector's Edition will include two CDs, the DVD, three heavy vinyl discs, a poster, lithographs, and more.

SOUNDGARDEN plays a warm-up show at the Vic Theatre in Chicago on Thursday (August 5) before headlining the third day of Lollapalooza on Sunday (August 8).

Beyond Lollapalooza and the new CD, SOUNDGARDEN is taking its return day-to-day. "I think our goal now is to do what we always wanted to do, which is to — at our own pace and in our own time — just do what we want when we want to do it," Cornell told USA Today. "Whether it's shows, songs, whatever it might be, records, we'll know when we get there."
